Which Kind of Bone represents You?

January 30, 2005

Ezekiel 37:1-14

Ezekiel was taken to a Valley

Literally Filled with thousands of Bones

Watched as the Lord took those bones & put them back together
God made people that were alive

Passage represents the people of Israel

People who were scattered all over the world.
People who were considered a weak people
And God put them back together into a strong nation
A nation whose King is the Lord
Some of this happened in 1948
                       Will continue until Jesus returns
Israel will never be complete again until the real King is in the throne.

Many of Israel’s problems seen in their history

When they wanted a flesh & Blood king instead of God
Their nation began to go downhill.
This was no surprise to God, He knew it would happen.
It was part of His Divine plan.
One day His plan will be completed

In EMT class you had to learn the bones of the body

208 bones in the Human body
Without bones there are many things that you and I could not do
             Without bones in my hand.......
couldn’t eat fried chicken or pick up a fork... anything.
Without bones in our feet... we wouldn’t be able to walk.

Today we want to look at seven of these bones & relate them to us... each of us is represented by one of these bones. Question is which kind of bone represents you?

1.     There is the WISHBONE CHURCH MEMBER.

I know we don’t have wishbones in our bodies

      Found in chickens and turkeys
         But this is a bone.
There are those who:

A.       Don’t want to work for the good of the church.

Those who just wish things were different.

1.    Wishing the offerings were up

2.    Wishing the attendance were up

3.    Wishing the preaching was up

Those wishes can come true:

Attendance would go up if we try harder in winning the lost

When attendance goes up so does the offering

Preaching would be up if you prayed for the preacher more

Pray that God would give me wisdom in what to preach

In next few weeks will start a new Bible study

Pray that I have the mind of Christ as I teach & preach

When preaching gets up you can take some credit

By knowing that you prayed for the preacher.

B.       Those who just wish they could miss services for the slightest reason and not hear anyone say anything to them about it.

Before you think that is not so:

Ask some of those folks who miss regularly if that’s their wish.

If they are completely honest that is their wish.

There are three types of church members:

1)    Those who watch what happens

2)    Those who make things happen.

3)    Those who wondered what happened.

Another way of saying that is that there are Heroes, Zeros, and Neros.

Heroes do what needs to be done!

          Zeros do nothing at all!

          Neros are just fiddling around!

The Biblical term for this person is Talebearer

Listen to these scripture passages:

(Lev 19:16 KJV)  Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.

(Prov 11:13 KJV)  A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

(Prov 20:19 KJV)  He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

(Ezek 22:9 KJV)  In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they commit lewdness.

I heard a preacher speak on talebearing one time:

Here were the points of the message:

A.    Favorite conversation is gossip

B.    Favorite creed of life is contention

C.    Favorite climate is confusion or conflict.

D.    Favorite commentary on life:

“What is wrong with the preacher or people of church?”

Worst part is, same person could spread the Gospel instead of Gossip

3.    The Funny Bone Church Member Click here for full scripture references

I never figured out why they call this bone, the funny bone.

I never thought it was funny when I hit it on something.

a.       These are the ones that get their feelings hurt so easy.

b.      These are the ones that make mountains out of mole hills.

“They are like buttons, they pop off at the wrong times.”

People that think that they are martyrs when not cuddled and catered to

But you and I have to be bigger people than that!

We have to move on and forget it no matter how much it hurts!

4.     The Dry Bone Members Click here for full scripture references

A.     Show no emotion regardless of the situation

B.     Shames those who do

These folks bother me a lot more than those who shout!

These folks are dried up because they are dead.

Bones don’t dry up unless they are DEAD!

A praise the Lord or Amen never hurt anybody.

If can’t find anything to get excited about

Get excited about the closing prayer, it’s over then.

5.     Hip Bone Church Member

A.    Wants to serve the Lord on Credit.

B.    Never give as they ought to the Lord

When we talk about Lordship and trust

Jesus is either Lord of all or not Lord at all.

We either trust him with all or only when it is convenient

The bible tells us that Abraham Tithed 10%

The bible tells us that if we bring our tithes to the storehouse

That God will pour out blessings upon us

If it is good enough for Abraham it is good enough for me!

Jesus tithed

You say but the Bible doesn’t say that?

Oh but it was part of the law and Jesus Kept the law in its entirety

If it is good enough for Jesus it is good enough for me!

But it hurts some folks hipbone to give as they ought.

For the Church Prayer is:

a.       Power Source. (Acts 4:23-31 KJV)  And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

Every time the church had problems they went to prayer

Today they have problems they run somewhere else

Then they wonder why things don’t work out.

(Psa 143:1 KJV)  A Psalm of David. Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.

b.   Provisions are provided through prayer:

(Mat 6:9-11 KJV)  After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

The Father gives the best to His children

But He expects us to ask

It is not selfish to ask for our daily bread

God tells us to ask for our daily bread.

Where God Guides... He Provides for your needs.

c.   Prayer prepares us for service

(Eph 6:18 KJV)  Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

7. BACKBONE CHURCH MEMBERS Click here for full scripture references

A.  The ones who have BIBLE CONVICTIONS

Daniel and his three friends Shadrach, Meshack, & Abendnego

They stood up for their convictions many times

They did it at great personal risk

They did it when it wasn’t in style to do so

No one was watching over them

Like a parent or a preacher

But they stood on their convictions!

What some unmovable Bible convictions? Won’t have time this morning to go in depth, but here are some unmovable convictions:

1.    Jesus Christ is and was and will always be God.

He was 100% God and 100% man at all times when on the earth

He did allow himself to be limited here on earth

But he was still God in the flesh.

2.    Word of God is infallible, inerrant, & unshakable.

It is inspired by God, it is true and without error.

Throughout centuries many have tried to destroy it’s credibility

But they have only proven its authenticity.

3.    The church is God’s plan for spreading Gospel

The church may not be what it should be or can be

But it is still God’s plan to use the church to reach the lost.

4.    Salvation is by Grace Alone.

It is not salvation by grace plus something.

(Eph 2:8 KJV)  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Salvation is a result of faith

Trusting the gift of God which was his Son Jesus Christ

Who died for our sins and rose on the third day.

5. Jesus is coming again.

When? I do not know but he promised that He would come again.

What are convictions?

a.     Convictions are self determined:

Your belief is not a conviction if need others to stand with you

A Conviction is not influenced by what others do or ask of you.

b.     Convictions are non-negotiable.

No compromising if you have a conviction

If you are willing to compromise your belief it is not a conviction.

c.     Convictions are victorious.

Victory is standing up for what you believe is right regardless of cost

d.     Convictions are lifestyles.

Beliefs will be evidenced in believer’s life

Convictions will control a person’s life.

B. Backbone Christians are the ones who have Bible confidence (Acts 27:25 KJV)  Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

What kind of Bone represents you? Wishbone? Jawbone? Funny Bone? Hipbone out of joint? We need more kneebone and backbone church members.
