The Battle Belongs to the Lord

March 11, 2006

17:8  The tribe of Amalek, descendants of Esau’s grandson (cf. Gen. 36:12), attacked Israel from the rear, assaulting the stragglers (see Deut. 25:17-18).

17:9  This is the first mention of Joshua, who was about 45 at this time.

17:10  Hur, who tradition says was married to Miriam, Moses’ sister, is mentioned only here and in 24:14. Hur, grandfather of Bezalel was probably a different person (1 Chron. 2:19-20).

17:14  Write. First mention of official records (see also 34:27-28). Moses also kept some sort of diary of the wanderings (Num. 33:2). A judgment on Amalek occurred in Saul’s time (cf. 1 Sam. 15). See also Num. 14:45 and note on Est. 3:1.

17:15  The Lord is My Banner. Heb., Yahweh-nissi; i.e., rallying point (Isa. 11:10

The Battle Belongs To The Lord

in heavenly armour we'll enter the land
the battle belongs to the Lord
no weapon that's fashioned against us shall stand
the battle belongs to the Lord

we sing glory and honor
power and strength to the Lord

the power of darkness comes in like a flood
the battle belongs to the Lord
He's raised up a standard, the power of His blood
the battle belongs to the Lord

when your enemy presses in hard do not fear
the battle belongs to the Lord
take courage my friend, your redemption is near
the battle belongs to the Lord
