Light of My Life

March 11, 2007

Ephesians 5:8-21

I.    Turn on the Light.

In creation God’s first business was to produce light (Genesis 1:3-5).

Two things God did in creation!!!!

God said: “Let there be light.”

God separated the light from the darkness.

In creation of the new kingdom He first brought light (John 1:3-5).

In Jesus was life, and that life was the light of men.

The light (Jesus) shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

Think how dark and drab the world would be without the light of Christian influence.

We can feel the darkness. It closes in on us. It produces fear.

Light relaxes us. Takes away fear and lights up the unknown.

Jesus says to us as His disciples: “You are the light of the world.”

We are in the light business. “God, light up my life.”

    Let the light produce.

   Goodness (v. 9).

    Goodness shows true kindness.

   Also demonstrates caring, benevolence.

   Righteousness.

    Purity.

    Can be trusted.

    A Godly nature.

   Truth

This is moral truth, not just something to be known but it is something to be done.

The truth of Christ makes us useful and helpful citizens of the world.

Today’s society has put at the top two desires for their leaders: excellence and integrity or truth.

Even a tree will be fruitless unless the sunlight can get to it. It can even die in the dark.

Light reveals what pleases the Lord (v. 10).

       Light exposes evil (v. 13).

Everything exposed to the light becomes light.

The best way to rid society of evil is to drag all evil out into the light.

The best way to cleanse our hearts is to expose ourselves to the light of Christ.

Christ will shine on us (v. 14).

Find your way in the light.

Be careful how you live (v. 15).

Be wise and make the most of every opportunity (v. 16).

The days are evil (v. 16).

Understand what the Lord’s will is (v. 17).

    Do not get drunk.

1.    People get drunk to relieve tension, to bury guilt, to feel more at ease socially, to gain a greater sense of strength and security, and to experience a warmth and glow that is not normally theirs.

2.    These are precisely the results of being filled with the Holy Spirit.

3.    Therefore he says: “Do not be drunk … but be filled with the Spirit” (v. 18).

Help one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (v. 19).

Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord (v. 19).

Always give thanks to God for everything (v. 20).

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (v. 21).
